Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi’s wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she’s falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.
She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.
Stop what you are doing! Go out and read this book! You won’t regret it. This was such a fantastic retelling of the classic tale of A Thousand and One Nights. From the cover, to the endpapers, to the story itself, it was such a beautiful, dark book. This has been one of the best books I’ve read so far.
We finally get a diverse cast of characters and they are all wonderful and complicated! After her best friend is killed after marrying the Caliph, Sharazad offers to marry him herself so that she can kill him. But once she gets in the palace, she finds that things are not all that they should be. The Caliph intrigues her, and she him. Sharazad finds herself falling for the murderer of her best friend, and betraying her first love.
While this book did have a love triangle (which, usually, I hate!), I found that in this particular case, I did not mind. Their love seemed impossible, and yet I kept rooting for Khalid and Sharazad. Renèe Ahdieh created a story that kept me turning the pages, eager to find out what happened next, and I was heartbroken when I came to the end! I need the sequel like yesterday, so that I can find out what will happen next in their love story. Honestly one of the best books this year!
