Ten Books Every History Lover Should Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  Each week there is a new topic and this week’s topic was: Ten Books Every X Lover Should Read (choose your topic). I chose history.

  1. With the Old Breed by E.B. Sledge—This book is a great perspective of WWII through the eyes of an infantryman.
  2. We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese by Elizabeth Norman—these women had to survive under battle conditions, treating the wounded, and later, during captivity under the Japanese, to survive captivity
  3. Ghost Soldiers: The Epic Account of WWII’s Greatest Rescue Mission by Hampton Sides—this book details the horrible conditions that these POW’s (survivors of the Bataan Death March) had to live through, and the rescue mission by the Green Beret’s.
  4. The Murder of Tutankhamen by Bob Brier, Ph.D.—This was an interesting look at what could have possible killed (or who murdered, in this case) Tutankhamen.
  5. Good Wives: Image and Reality in the Lives of Women in Northern New England, 1650-1750 by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich—this book is a fascinating look into the women who came over to the New World.
  6. A Midwife’s Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on her Diary, 1785-1812 by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
  7. Other Powers: The Age of Sufferage, Spiritualism, and the Scandalous Victoria Woodhull by Barbara Goldsmith—this was just such a fascinating book.
  8. Sex With Kings by Eleanor Herman—this is such a fascinating look into how the mistresses of Kings helped influence history. Definitely recommend, along with her other book, Sex With Queens.
  9. The Days of the French Revolution by Christopher Hibbert
  10. Marie Antoinette: The Journey by Antonia Fraser—this was such a good biography and insight into France’s iconic Queen.

  1. We have the same topic this week! Cheers to history! 🙂
You have a lot of interesting sounding books on your list! I’ll definitely be checking these out because I haven’t read any of them. I am especially intrigued by Good Wives.
