While I found The Orphan Queen to be predictable at times, this one did not suffer from that. I loved the character growth and the relationship between Wilhelmina and Tobiah, and thought it was very well done! While we know that they have feelings for each other, their positions as rulers of different countries and the fact that the wraith is spreading makes things complicated.
After that cruel cliffhanger at the end of The Orphan Queen, this book picks up right where it left off. I thought the pacing was consistent throughout, with no lulls to make you lose interest. I loved seeing Wil and Tobiah come into each of their crowns and learn how to be a rulers. It was especially nice to see Wil’s evolution from orphaned criminal to queen.
There is some shocking information that you learn in this book, that had me turning pages. And then there is the ending. I’m still heartbroken and don’t know when I will recover. I really enjoyed this conclusion and definitely recommend reading this duology!
My Rating: 4/5 stars
