Book Review | Magic Bitter, Magic Sweet

Another wonderful book from Charlie Holmberg! She has quickly become one of my favorite authors!

I loved Magic Bitter, Magic Sweet! It’s got baking! magic! ghosts! and is a tale about folly and it’s consequences, forgiveness and redemption. It follows Maire, who has this gift of infusing her treats with emotions and abilities. When her town is invaded by marauders and she is sold as a slave to Allemas, she is made to use her gift to make a gingerbread house for a witch, among other things.

Maire has no memories of her past, and no idea why she has these abilities. Her one connection is the ghost, Fyel. It is interesting to see the story unfold as she learns more about her history, and her past actions that have led to this moment.

I loved this story; Followed by Frost is still my favorite book by her, but I can see this one quickly becoming another favorite. It has similar messages of redemption and forgiveness. Holmberg knows how to weave together a story; it is whimsical, haunting, and wonderful. I definitely recommend this book!

My Rating: 4/5 stars
