Book Review | Dark Matter

This book is insane and I loved it! This one will keep you up late at night, eager to find out what happens next!

“Are you happy in your life?”

I had won this book in a Read it Forward giveaway (book provided by Crown Publishing). This book has been on my radar since I saw it in May at BookCon and saw that gorgeous cover!

Let me just start off by saying I’m not a science person. I don’t understand half of it at times, so books like Dark Matter make me nervous. I was leery of not being able to understand the explanations of quantum physics. However, Blake Crouch does a wonderful job of not explaining all the science parts of this book without losing me.

That being said, this is not just a science fiction book—it’s a mix of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, thriller, suspense, a survival story, and (in my opinion) a love story.

“I don’t look back.
I don’t say goodbye.
And this moment slips past unnoticed.
The end of everything I know, everything I love.”

What I loved most about this book was seeing the single minded determination he had to get back to his family. The only thing that drives him when he is at his lowest is thoughts of his wife and son. He has to go through this terrifying journey to get back to them and it had me turning the pages to find out what would happen next.

I definitely recommend this if you like any of the categories I mentioned earlier, and if you were fans of The Martian by Andy Weir.

My Rating: 5 stars

  1. I really like the sound of this book! I’m not a fan of science, I’ve never understood anything, but reading your review, I feel I would enjoy it anyway. Great review 🙂

    • Thank you! I’m never seem to understand anything in science either! What I loved about Crouch’s book was that he writes it in such a way as anyone can understand it and know what is going on. 🙂

      • It reminds me of The Laptev Virus. I was reluctant to read it because of all the science and medecine talks, but the author’s explanations were precise enough so a reader familiar with the subject would not be bored while a complete novice would understand too 🙂

  2. You won this book? How lucky! I requested an ARC and didn’t get one. I’m a huge fan of Blake Crouch, so I was pretty bummed. I’m glad you liked it. I shall be reading this one soon. It sounds amazing! 🙂

      • He’s so imaginative and I love his writing. Of all the sci-fi books I’ve read, his are by far the best. I was planing to buy it on Kindle. I was really bummed I didn’t get an ARC, but my score on NetGalley wasn’t all that great when I asked, so I wasn’t all that surprised. Thank you! 🙂

      • I’ll definitely have to check out his other books! I know what you mean about Netgalley; it’s always disappointing when you don’t get approved for a book you really want.

Ohh, I’ve seen this book around but didn’t quite know what it was about! I’m definitely intrigued now! Although I haven’t read The Martian yet (gah, I need more reading time omg I never seem to get to all the books I want to get to!) but this’ll have to go on the TBR for after I’ve read that one too!!

    • If I could make two of me, so that one of me could just read, and the other me could do everything else, I definitely would! There definitely is just not enough time to read all the books I want to read!
