This is definitely a different fantasy book than what is out there, and the premise is what drew me to this book. It follows Spectra, a Balance, who is being pursued for her special abilities. But really what the main focus of this book was her relationship with three different guys: Alexander (a sorcerer), Bay (a predator), and Mercury (son of an archangel). Instead of a love triangle, you get a love quadrangle in this book, and she is not committed to a monogamous relationship, which honestly bothered me (call me a prude if you will).
Because the book was so focused on her relationship with these three guys, it suffered in the world building. If you hadn’t read the description of the book before reading the book, you would not know what each of the characters was; there’s allusions to what they are, but I still don’t understand the world they live in, and couldn’t begin to explain it to you.
There is action and some suspense, so that made up for some things. I thought the book was decent, but not my favorite. Overall, the plot was slow moving and the world building was lacking.
My rating: 2.5/5 stars
